Last year was nothing if not an incredible success for far-right populist parties in Europe. And those within Italy were no exception. The 2022 Italian parliamentary elections saw a decisive victory for the Brothers of Italy led by Giorgia Meloni, now heading a coalition of other prominent far-right parties including the Lega and Forza Italia. Making history, Meloni has formed the first far-right government since World War Two and has become the first female prime minister. In doing so, she leads a coalition that stresses the need for stronger borders, espouses nationalist, anti-immigrant sentiment and embraces a scepticism of the European Union. The health of the inclusive, liberal democratic state that Italy has become appears to be at stake, as well as the nation's role in the EU.
On this, Associate Professor Marco Faravelli and Professor Fabrizio Carmignani will answer important questions on this historic shift, both inside and outside Italy's borders.
