The Russo-Ukraine War - Hosted by the AIIA Queensland
Join us either in-person or online with Major General Mick Ryan AM (retired), who will detail the strategic implications and technological innovations of the devastating Russo-Ukraine War.
If you are attending in-person, please arrive at Holding Redlich at 5.30pm for registration and drinks. This event will be available online. After registering, on April 11 you will receive a follow-up confirmation email containing further details on how to join the webinar which will commence at 6pm AEST. The event is free for AIIA Queensland members and AIIA members from all states. Non-members pay $10 and student non-members $5.

The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine was a dramatic escalation of Russia's aggression against Ukraine after eight years of lower level conflict in eastern Ukraine. The 20th century scourge of large scale, destructive industrial warfare has burst into the 21st century with the Russo-Ukraine War. We have witnessed some stunning technologies at play. But, despite the breathless reports of many commentators, there is far more old than new in this war. Indeed, every new war is an aggregation of the ideas, institutions, technologies, and techniques that have preceded it. If we peer close enough, we can see the different historical layers that inform, shape and sometimes strangle the effectiveness of military organisations. In the Ukraine War, we have witnessed many of the continuities from previous wars carry through into the strategy, diplomacy and military operations of both sides.
In this presentation, Mick will explore both the continuities and new aspects of war that are evident in Ukraine, and what it means for the future of warfare and strategic competition.

Major General (retired)Mick spent 35 years in the Australian Army and had the honour of commanding soldiers at troop, squadron, regiment, task force and brigade levels. He has a long-standing interest in military history and strategy, advanced technologies, organizational innovation, and adaptation theory. He was inaugural President of the Defence Entrepreneurs Forum (Australia) and is a member of the Military Writers Guild. He is a keen author on the interface of military strategy, innovation, and advanced technologies, as well as how institutions can develop their intellectual edge. In 2022, Mick retired from the Australia Army. In the same month, his book War Transformed was published by USNI Books. He is an adjunct fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington DC, and a non-resident fellow of the Lowy Institute in Sydney. In January 2023 Mick was also appointed as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. His next book, White Sun War, will be published in April 2023 by Casemate Books. It is a fictional account of a future war over Taiwan.
