Youth Leadership For Peace and Security - Hosted by the AIIA Queensland
Join us either in-person or online with Australian Research Council DECRA Fellow, Dr. Helen Berents who will discuss the inclusion of youth in peace building in our region.
If you are attending in-person, please arrive at Holding Redlich at 5.30pm for registration and drinks. This event will be available online. After registering, on October 10 you will receive a follow-up confirmation email containing further details on how to join the webinar which will commence at 6pm AEST. The event is free for AIIA Queensland members and AIIA members from all states. Non-members pay $10 and student non-members $5.

Youth make up a majority of the population in most violence-affected contexts, yet they have been frequently overlooked in peacebuilding efforts. The unanimous passage of UN Security Council resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security in 2015 recognised for the first time the important contribution of youth for the 'maintenance of international peace and security'. It has led to the establishment of a new international agenda for youth inclusion that has been adopted by international organisations, states, and civil society actors around the world.
Southeast Asia and the Pacific has been radically overlooked in the first seven years of the Youth, Peace and Security agenda despite being one of the youngest regions in the world with a median age of 28 years old. Recently, regional momentum for the agenda has accelerated, including attention from the ASEAN and the adoption of a National Action Plan on Youth, Peace and Security by the Philippines in 2022 (only the fourth globally). This talk examines how youth have come to be taken seriously by institutions internationally, before highlighting some key tensions and opportunities that have emerged with the agenda and pointing to possible directions in the region. Paying meaningful attention to youth leadership in peacebuilding offers opportunities for building more durable, inclusive peace in our region and beyond.

Helen Berents
Dr. at Griffith UniversityDr Helen Berents is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Government and International Relations at Griffith University and currently holds an Australian Research Council DECRA Fellowship. She is also a member of the Griffith Asia Institute and Centre for Governance and Public Policy. Her DECRA fellowship project examines youth peace advocacy and leadership in the context of the emergent global ‘Youth, Peace and Security Agenda’. Her broader work draws on feminist international relations, critical peace studies, and the sociology of youth to inform her work on representations and participation of children and youth in peace and conflict, everyday approaches to peacebuilding, and local-global relations in peace and security governance.
