Security, Defence and the New Lithuanian Geopolitical Reality: The 20th Anniversary of Lithuania's Membership to NATO - Hosted by the AIIA Queensland


Join us either in-person or online with the Ambassador of Lithuania to Australia, H.E. Darius Degutis, who will discuss the new geopolitical reality facing Lithuania, particularly amid regional tensions owing to the Russo-Ukraine War and a increasingly complex relationship with China.


If you are attending in-person, please arrive at Holding Redlich at 5:30pm for registration and drinks. This event will be available online. After registering, on April 16 at 5:30pm, you will receive a follow-up confirmation email containing further details on how to join the webinar which will commence at 6:00pm AEST. The event is free for AIIA Queensland members and AIIA members from all states. Those who are non-members will pay $10, while student non-members will pay $5.

Throughout his presentation, H.E. Darius Degutis will discuss three core elements of the new geopolitical reality that Lithuania now contends with.

  1. Lithuania and Australia: Delving into Lithuania's good partnership with Australia, despite the fact that the distance between the two countries is 16 000km.
  2. Support for Ukraine - Whatever Victory will Take: The reaction of neighbouring regions and the broader global community on collective security of the allies and denying the threat that Russia poses to NATO.
  3. A Challenging Relationship with China: Exploring the complexities in Lithuania's relationship with China, as outlined in the Indo-Pacific strategy and approved by the Lithuanian Government in July of 2023.

    H.E. Darius Degutis is a senior government executive with experience in a variety of major foreign and security policy issues, including ambassadorial postings in Australia, Israel, South Africa, Poland as well as senior diplomatic postings in the Embassies in U.S.A., Denmark and numerous assignments in Lithuanian diplomatic service. He has been responsible for setting up the first Lithuanian Embassy in Australia with a number of objectives, particularly developing wide relationships with Australia, including political and economic targets as well as maintaining strong connections with the Australian Lithuanian and Lithuanian Jewish communities. As Ambassador at large and in the role of Special Envoy of Foreign Minister for energy security matters, he directs day-to-day operations of matters related to key national and regional energy security issues, including supervision of staff, liaison with leading Parliamentary and Governmental officials, Members of the Ministers’ Cabinet. He has also developed and implemented strategic plans for energy security activities, including laws, policy recommendations to the Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and chairs of Parliamentary Committees.
