The Pacific's long-standing challenges of economic underdevelopment, geographic isolation and environmental risks are now being exacerbated by:

  • Continuing health effects and economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Climate change, extreme weather events and natural disasters.
  • And security challenges like transnational crime, cyber security and environmental and resources security.

These challenges are all unfolding against the backdrop of rising geostrategic competition in the region.

The Albanese Government came to office with a comprehensive plan to deepen Pacific relationships, boost Australia's official development assistance budget, develop a new international development policy and improve the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's development capabilities.

The Minister for International Development the Pacific, The Honourable Pat Conroy MP, will provide an update on the Government's Pacific and development policies and how they fit into the Government's broader foreign policy agenda.
