China's economic, political, and military ascendancy has transformed its role in Asia, making it the region's predominant trading partner and investor. Simultaneously, China has adopted a more assertive stance on territorial claims, notably in the South China Sea, and introduced initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Global Security Initiative (GSI). As China collaborates with Western powers on stabilising bilateral relations, tensions persist, with interpretations ranging from suspicions of limiting China's global rise to concerns about China exporting autocratic governance models.
This dynamic has significant implications for Asian economies, dependent on diplomatic and economic engagement with both China and Western powers to address challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, and security.
The presentation analyses five major developments and trends to elucidate China's engagement in Asia, emphasizing the need for strategic cooperation and alternative approaches to ensure sustainability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region. The outcome of these efforts will determine whether China's ambitions align with addressing climate change collaboratively or preparing for potential conflict.
