When politicians are appointed to diplomatic posts they are often criticised. "Jobs for the boys (or girls)" cry the critics. But is this fair? Why are politicians appointed? Do they perform well? Should more be appointed? Brett Mason, a former politician and Ambassador to The Netherlands, will discuss his own messy appointment, how he believes politicians can be best used to strengthen our diplomatic representation, and the pitfalls of political appointments.
