The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) from 1992 to 1995 resulted in ethnic cleansing, genocide, mass displacement and significant human rights violations. The 1995 the Dayton Peace Accords ended the armed conflict by creating a power sharing framework dividing the country into two entities, the Federation of BiH and Republika Srpska, and Brcko district. However, the country's unruly post-war order has resulted in an extremely complicated political regimes, teetering on collapse. This talk will analyse the politics and culture of twenty years of Srebrenica genocide denial in BiH and beyond. It will show how denial at the political level spilled over to a pervasive culture of genocide, in all elements of society. Prof Simic will argue that without significant revision and radical reform of law, education, and political institutions we can expect to see continuation of the denial of the Srebrenica genocide for many years to come. Thirty years after the genocide in BiH, the country is in the grips of an escalating political crisis, renewed violence and further fragmentation.
