Thirty years ago, Rwanda witnessed one of the most violent and unimaginable events in modern history – the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi which claimed over one million people. Today, the country is regarded as a model of post-conflict recovery and economic development. Rwanda's annual GDP growth averaged 8 per cent over two decades, beginning in 2000.

On this, Rwanda's High Commissioner to Australia, H.E. Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye will shed light on the remarkable strides Rwanda has made in its post-genocide recovery.

High Commissioner Uwihanganye will expound on the period that saw the tiny East African country descend into one of the most violent and unimaginable events in modern history - the genocide against the Tutsis, which claimed the lives of more than a million people. He will unpack efforts that have transformed Rwanda into a shining example of resilience and hope, as well as how national commitment to reconciliation, reconstruction, and economic growth is paving the way for a brighter future. Finally, he will delve into the role of home-grown solutions (HGS) as a form of restorative justice, lifting the poor out of poverty.
