The world is becoming increasingly complex and fractured, with significant implications for the rules-based system. Middle powers such as Australia and Canada have a unique opportunity to play a constructive role in shaping a reformed international system that is adapted to the needs of a modern era. Doing so requires strong alliances and a collaborative approach to diplomacy.
Dr. Julie Sunday, Canada's High Commissioner and former Assistant Deputy Minister for Consular, Security, and Emergency Management and Senior Official for Hostage Affairs, will speak to these challenges and opportunities from a Canadian perspective. In particular, she will draw on her efforts to situate and strengthen the Canadian-led Initiative Against Arbitrary Detention in State-to-State Relations within the multilateral system.
