The international rules-based order is facing unprecedented challenges: from Russia's invasion of the Ukraine to rising geopolitical and geoeconomic tensions in the Indo-Pacific.

In view of these worrying developments in international politics, Germany, too, is readjusting its role. Beyond its role as a key pillar of the European Union and a proponent of climate change action, Germany recalibrates foreign policies in line with broader international security interests. Relations in the Indo-Pacific are being enhanced, including with the appointment of a Special Envoy for the Pacific Island States. Germany is in the process of producing a National Security Strategy and also a specific China Strategy.

In implementing its Indo-Pacific Guidelines, Germany is also committed to deepening even further cooperation with partners, such as Australia, to preserve multilateral and rules-based approaches to the regional and global order, but also in the context of readjusting energy supply options.

But what progress has been made and what are the opportunities and challenges associated with a more ambitious engagement of Germany (and the EU) in the Indo-Pacific region?
